This was my second trip to Honduras, so I thought it was time to go off the beaten track a little. One thing that attracted me to the north coast was the growing Garifuna towns in the area. The Garifuna culture is a proud one. Descended from both African and Indian roots, the people have celebrated the uniqueness of their music, language, crafts and festivals, while managing to not become insular. I was lucky to come across a small resort called Banana Beach located between Trujillo and the vibrant Santa Fe. It was a great place to explore the expanding nearby towns and still come home to top-notch Caribbean amenities.

The resort also does not make the mistake of isolating itself from the local culture and people. Sitting in the resort bar "The Mystic" you have as much opportunity to hang out with an interesting local from San Antonio as you do an interesting guest from Amsterdam. The locals have made the bar their own and treat it with the respect they are given, no uncomfortable drink demands or elaborate loan requests. This feeling of mutual respect was most present during a fantastic Garifuna party on the last Sunday of my week stay.

The day started off as normal, complete relaxation, with a fine breakfast of homebaked bread - got to love their German chef! I was then told that there would be music and dancing later that day and a good party - Garifuna style! The drummers, dancers and locals started trickling in during the day with the music starting about four - it was definitely worth the wait.

Garifuna music seems to owe a lot to African drum rhythms, it?s incredibly fun to listen to and you cannot help bopping to the beat - even if it's just in your seat! But what I loved most about the experience was the theatre of it. Punta, the most popular Garifuna dance is all about theatre and competition. The drummers start playing and one by one people step into the space in front of them, with spectators forming a loose circle around them. Each dancer tries to out dance those before them, whether solo or in couples. It is competitiveness without a hard edge. Everyone laughs and encourages whichever dancer takes center stage - even when it is a un-rhythmic gringo like me!

Quite a few of the festivals are old and based on religious beliefs and the lunar cycle of the moon, while others are fairly recent and are meant to highlight regional crafts and customs. Songkran is the most famous festival not only in Chiang Mai, but throughout all of Thailand. This festival occurs in the middle of April each year and is the celebration of the new Lunar calendar year. Officially Songkran lasts 3 days, but in practice it can be celebrated in Chiang Mai for a week or even longer. While the festival began as a way to honor the elders and to bring luck for the new year, one aspect of it has become most popular and that is the throwing of water on others. At one time this was done to cleanse people of the past years sins and get them ready for the new yar, however these days the water throwing is more like an all out water battle and if you are in Thailand during this time of year expect to get wet. If you travel to the canals in Chiang Mai you will find them thronged with people all getting into the action throwing water on anyone that gets near to them. If you don't mind getting wet then Songkran is not to be missed.

Loy Kratong is another famous Thai festival and in typical Lanna fashion is celebrated better in Chiang Mai than anywhere else in Thailand. The festival occurs typically in November and developed as a thanksgiving ceremony to the water spirits as well as a way to get rid of bad luck and draw good luck to oneself. The festival is characterized by the floating (or loying) or the kratongs, which are small flat disks made traditionally from banana leaves. Those who loy their kratongs place offerings on the disks of incense, candles, food and money before setting them to float on the rivers, lakes and canals throughout Thailand. Seeing several hundred of these floating down the river is quite a sight to behold. Even more amazing to see are the many hot air ballons that are set into the air. These are called Khom Loy and are made from rice paper and are set to float into the air by placing a lit candle in a holder underneath the paper "balloon". During Loy Kratong it's not unusual for thousands of these mini hot air balloons to be released in Chiang Mai making the sky look like a fairy tale scene.

Viva Venezia

Venezia, or Venice as it is known in English, is one of the world's most striking cities thanks to its unique location, stunning architecture and amazing history. It is unsurprising that some 50,000 tourists a day can visit the city to marvel in wonder at one of the most beautiful cities on earth.

The city is built across 117 small islands in the Venetian Lagoon, which runs along the Adriatic Sea. The cities famous canals and waterways acts as its highways as the only mode of transport available are boats or on foot. Travelling from one destination to the other via boat is just one of the reasons that makes this such a special place. The city is built upon ancient wooden poles which were driven deep in the mud below. Amazingly these wooden poles still hold up the city to this day and are able to take the weight of the grand buildings and marble churches which adorn Venice.

One of the most popular attractions of the city is the world famous Venice Carnival which is known for its fancy dress and Venetian masks. Reliving the grander period of 18th century Venice the carnival lasts for a month with balls, music, shows and plays, allowing everyone enough time to show off their magnificent fancy dress.

St Mark's Basilica and square is perhaps the most famous landmark in Venice. St Mark's Basilica was built to house the remains of St Mark, the patron saint of Venice. The San Marco mosaics cover the enormous church. They are beautiful illuminated Gospels and cover over 8,000 square metres. The adjacent church museum house is a fascinating insight into the Basilica as well as its house artefacts such as the famous four horses, which were taken by Napoleon but thankfully returned after the fall of his empire. In St Mark's Square in front of the Basilica you can dance the night away as musicians delight the crowds from nearby cafes.

Another famous landmark which can also be found on St Mark's Square is the Doge's Palace. For those travelling to Venice via the sea on a cruise the Doge's Palace is the first land mark you will spot and as a result it has become a symbol of the city and of its might for centuries. The palace as well as being the home of the Doge (the Doge being the leader of the Venice Republic) was also the seat of the government and its laws courts for centuries. Today the building along with St Mark's Basilica, Piazzetta and St Mark's Campanile form one of the most famous back drops in the world.

Venice is one of those cities that just begs to be visited and once you do it's likely it won't be your last visit either.

Splendour In the Grass Fever Has Hit Woodford

Well Splendour is finally here. Traffic is on the increase as the steady flow of festival tickets holders stream into town. Most locals welcome them with open arms and others are hiding out in their houses until the chaos has ended. I saw a couple in my street had the caravan hooked up ready to head out of town for the weekend.

Locals that are party-goers they are in 7th heaven. Locals that haven't got tickets can still join in the festivities at the Woodford Pub that has a band playing on Friday night. The ever so popular band Mumford and Sons starts from 3. 30pm onwards. The excitement that is buzzing through the air of Woodford is felt all around. I am one of the ones looking forward to this event.

Woodford Show grounds letting out camping sites has been a saviour for many ticket holders looking desperately for camping spot near the festival. Approximately 1400 campers are booked into the Woodford Show grounds. Unfortunately those that are still looking are out of luck as it is now fully booked and they are taking no more campers.

Worthy cause Australia a non profit organisation are setting a coffee van up at night at the Woodford Show Grounds so the campers can get steaming hot coffee when they head back from the festival to their camp ground.

Woodford Scouts will be outside IGA all weekend as Adrian Raedel pointed out on Facebook. "Make sure you get a "big mick" sausages, bacon, cheese, egg on bread from the scouts outside the IGA all weekend"!!!. The Scouts also had campers at their shed. Woodford helped out as much as they could for any of those that needed camping.

The Catholic ladies and Woodford Pony Club are having a big breakfast for those campers at the Woodford Show Grounds. It sure will be a big breakfast for 1400 campers. Good luck to those who are cooking.

News Agency Clews News is selling phone cards all weekend for those people at the festival needing to top up there phone balance.

Dick from Thrifty Link Woodford Hardware has all the equipment campers have forgotten behind. Dick says he has had people lining outside his door since Tuesday.

Virgin Mobile has set up a stall in Woolworth's too, they're rumoured to be having a promotion about giving out tents. Not sure how it works if anybody knows send in a comment and for the others worth a sticky beak and going to check out yourselves.

Traffic is meant to peak tomorrow so remember to leave early to work, as you might be late. From Woodford Town onwards it will be 60 km all the way through to the festival. So stay alert, as there might be some tired drivers out there coming from all over Australia.

Naples - City of Pizza and Castles

Earthly and full of life, Naples lay claim to the discovery of both pizza and Sophia Loren. Italy's third largest city also boasts of enchanting castles, excellent museums, a splendid cathedral and colorful neighborhoods linked by cobblestone streets.

South Beach shopping is not usually a morning activity for those visitors of beachside Miami. These early bird excursions are mostly unheard of for locals, who eat late, stay up until the wee hours and generally rise just shy of noon. Savvy shoppers make an exception, however, for the Outdoor Antique & Collectible Market on famed Lincoln Road.

From October until May, two or three Sundays a month, the pedestrian-only Lincoln Road Mall changes its look from chic urban shopping Mecca to funky urban treasure hunt. And explorers come out in droves, from interior designers to deejays to lovers of Lucite. Over 100 dealers display furnishings, jewelry, collectibles and an amazing assortment of goodies from the 1900s to 1960s.

Do Not Trust the Guider!

In my Christmas Vacation last year, my parents and I went Hong Kong to enjoy our holiday. Because we never went there, so we employed a guider for us. But I can not believe the "horrible" experience would happen.

1. Our first stop is Ocean Park. Opened in 1977, it is one of Hong Kong's perennially popular attractions, providing an exciting mix of entertainment, education and conservation facilities. The 200-acre park is situated on the southern side of Hong Kong Island, with rides, exhibits and facilities on both sides of the mountain. A cable car system links the lowland and headland sections, offering spectacular views en route.

Ocean Park works to promote and support animal conservation in Hong Kong and throughout the Asia region. It has, in co-operation with other conservation organization, launched various conservation programs for a number of endangered species, including whales and dolphins. In addition, it has successfully bred rare species of birds, sharks and butterflies. Although we were very tired, we got lots of fun together. In the evening, we went back to hotel to enjoy delicious foods.

2. The next day we visited new and fun-filled entertainment facilities which are introduced from time to time. Over the past few years, new rides and exhibits such as Pacific Pier (2001); the Mine Train (2000); The Hong Kong Jockey Club Giant Panda Habitat (1999); Discovery of the Ancient World (1997); the Flying Swing (1997) and the Film Fantasia Simulator Ride (1996) have entertained thousands of visitors.

3. Most friends went to Hong Kong before told me the Disneyland is the place you should never miss. Situated in Penny's Bay on Lantau Island, Hong Kong Disneyland is unique among Disney theme parks in its incorporation of Chinese culture. The 55 acre park which was opened in September 2005 has a capacity of 34,000 visitors per day. Despite being the smallest Disneyland in the world Hong Kong Disneyland has a unique charm of its own which makes it an ideal outing for people of all ages.

In the noon, I got the phone call from my friend Emma and she told me do not forget buy present for her. Oops, I almost forget that! Then I consulted the guider Mary Zhang where to buy the souvenirs in Hong Kong. She leaded us to one shop near Victoria Bay. There are so many kinds of small gifts, key chains, perfume in small bottle, bags etc. I was deeply attracted by one bag with Chinese redbud. Also I knew Emma would like it too. So I made decision it was the one. I took it to the counter and already to pay. The boss took out one his forefinger, and I took one hundred dollars out. But he said it is one thousand dollar. Oh, my god! How such a bag valued one Thousands dollar? I could not believe that. Then I replied that I would not buy it and tended to go out of the shop. However, the boss did not let me go and ask me to pay one thousands dollar for the bag. Finally I called the policeman and ran out of that shop. What a terrible experience!

In the next few days, I did not dare to go any shop to buy present for my friend and always stayed in hotel. One day, I searched online and found an online store which located in Hong Kong and I found the same bag with Chinese redbud which is only $55. I placed one order for several items and got the package very soon.

Cheap Beach Apartments and Food in Honduras

Another tale from the beautiful Caribbean isles of Honduras... we are a week and a half in to our month trip and to be honest we just don't want to go home! We are continuing our journey along the north coast and left the beautiful beaches of Tela on Wednesday. I would recommend anyone visiting there to look up Garifuna tours and to definitely schedule in a trip to the amazing Punta Izopo Wildlife reserve.

We took in the city life of La Ceiba for a couple of nights staying at the beautiful The Quinta Real hotel. The service was great, as was the food. I would also recommend La Plancha steak house for any carnivores; it was 100% worth the visit. I cannot get over what amazing value Honduras is, we have stayed in other places in the Caribbean and I am sure there is no way you can get cheap beach apartments with this level of luxury anywhere else in the Caribbean.

We arrived in Trujillo on Friday and stopped off on the beach road for a bite to eat at Rogue Galleria. The burgers were great and the staff was friendly, it's a shame my Spanish is so very, very bad, as it would have been a good opportunity for a chat. Next stop was Banana Beach, where we will be staying for the next week.

So what can I say about Banana Beach? We are loving it so far! The resort is small and secluded, three 2 bed cabanas and 'The Mystic' bar and restaurant. It's nice after all of our trekking around Tela to be able to relax and have a week by the beach. Speaking of the beach, it's beautiful. The area is pretty undeveloped so you have nothing blocking your view of the shoreline or the bay. Yesterday we took an extended beach walk up to Santa Fe, stopping at a few watering holes along the way, which was lots of fun. We stopped at El Caballero and had some amazing fish. The restaurant was pretty rustic but the food was delicious, as were the mystery cocktails.

I am a bit of a foodie so one of the biggest draws Banana Beach had was its amazing food reviews. The menu is pretty thematic; the chef Juergen (great guy) is a whiz with Tex-Mex, Spanish, Italian, French and of course Caribbean so there is a lot to choose from. My first night I wanted to go for something a bit different so I opted for the Conch Seviche, a local dish, which is shellfish, salad and dressing. It's really easy to overcook the conch, but this was fantastic. After being inspired by a good old chin-wag with Rand the owner who hails from Texas this afternoon I considering a Tex-Mex option. I have been assured that even traditional Tex-Mex dishes like Burritos have a Honduran twist, so I am looking forward to it.

The shorter 45 minute walk will take you over the boardwalks leading through the mangroves, past Deans Island and out to where the birds are nesting on the sandbar. ??There are several other walks that the locals have developed, that take you through the bush and out to the Matakana River (they take about 1.5-2 hours). While residents will be familiar with these, not all visitors will be as familiar or have an idea of the history housed within these great structures.

With several thousand years of history under its belt, Many London Buildings and monuments have become important landmarks over the years by virtue of their age and centuries of day to day events by their famous and often royal occupants. Some of the most well known are recognized by most people in the world, but some of the stories behind them may not be as well known.

We're beginning with some of the more well known landmarks such as Big Ben and The Palace of Westminster. This one is universally recognized by many people outside of London, but not all are aware that Parliament is housed there, its history as a royal palace, or that fire and bombing raids have caused changes to it over the centuries.

Tours are available while Parliament is in session to both citizens of the U.K. and non-citizens. Some of the traditions from centuries gone by can still be seen here. A new Speaker of the House of Commons is physically dragged to the chair by other Members of Parliament upon election. It seems that when the House of Lords didn't care for a Speaker from the House of Commons in simpler times, they didn't keep their jobs, or their heads very long. On one particularly busy day, two speakers were beheaded. They don't behead so much anymore, and the two house system of checks and balances now solves disagreement through debate. The House of Commons Chamber was destroyed by a bombing raid in 1941 and was rebuilt as five floors, and reoccupied in 1950.

This bell also soon cracked, and the crack was rotated away from the hammer as it sits today, rather than recast a new bell.

St. Paul's Cathedral's first service took place in 1697. This is the fourth St. Paul's Cathedral to stand on the original site. The original St. Paul's Cathedral was built in the seventh century. The third was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. It took thirty five years to build the present cathedral that was designed by Sir Christopher Wren with the idea that the leading church in London should be magnificent, and every part of it, including the organ live up to that idea. Recent restoration for the 300th anniversary has it ready to serve London for another 300 years.

It is no longer a Benedictine Monastery, and St. Edward the Confessor's body lies in St. Edwards Shrine. The Harrison and Harrison built organ was placed in 1937, and has been restored and improved often. It is said to have unparalleled clarity. These new landmarks may take a little time for the citizenry to adopt as their own. The guy living down the street from Big Ben probably wasn't thrilled when that bell rang for the first time either.

Fun Things To Do In San Francisco While On Vacation

Here are 3 fun things to do in San Francisco that may be useful to anyone planning a vacation to this wonderful city in California.

1. While visiting our son in Santa Rosa, California, my wife an I ventured into San Francisco for a couple of days of sightseeing. On a tip from a friend, we planned to stop at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area on the way.

Driving down Rt. 101, we found the park just before the entrance to the Golden Gate Bridge, but, we were not prepared for what happened next. The park road took us up the hill which is on the northwest corner of the bridge and soon we were higher than the top of the bridge. We stopped at a designated parking spot and sat down in a grassy area.

The view was beyond spectacular. It seemed that we could reach out and touch the bridge. Continuing on, we found a large tunnel in the top of the hill which allowed us to take a short walk to the other side of the hill where we found an awesome view of the Pacific Ocean and the northern California coast.

We learned that during WWII a large gun was located in the tunnel to repel an enemy attack on our west coast. We highly recommend this site.

2. After our adventure of climbing higher than the Golden Gate Bridge we drove over to the Embarcadero which is the area along the waterfront including all of the piers.

This is a busy area with a wide variety of fun things to do, such as bike rentals, whale watching and sailing trips plus a large conference center. You can take a boat or ferry to Alcatraz, Angel Island, Sausalito, Oakland and several other interesting spots.

Our heads began to spin with so many options that we headed for Pier 39 to spend the rest of the day. First, we found many interesting places to eat; anywhere from fine dinning overlooking the water to quaint cafes. Our favorite treat turned out to be clam chowder in a bread bowl.

Shortly after arriving, we heard some awful bellowing, so we followed the sound and discovered a large family of sea lions which were sunning themselves.

It was great to see them in their natural environment. We took a romantic ride on the Carousel and ended the day with a wild ride around the harbor on the RocketBoat.

3. The next day we drove to the Exploratorium which is something like a museum and is full of very entertaining interactive exhibits. We found the exhibits to be terrific.

They taught is a major scientific principle, while having fun at the same time. We read some where that the Exploratorium has been called "a scientific funhouse" and we believe that's really true. The exhibits seem to be a very effective learning tool regardless of your age or prior knowledge.

They seem to stimulate your curiosity in ways you've never experienced before. We particularly liked the "Making your own telescope", " Build a solar system" and "Your weight in other worlds".

If you're visiting San Francisco and have children along you can't go wrong to check out the Exploratorium.

Banana Beach Honduras - Forget About the Gold Coast and Start Heading for the Banana Coast!

Since I was ten years old my father, without fail, went every year on a Caribbean vacation. He tended to stick to the big names, Aruba, Grand Cayman, Jamaica and Barbados. Every year he brought back pictures and trinkets from the Caribbean, a dance-hall CD, a traditional necklace or some souvenir. Undoubtedly initially prompted by the fact that my father would never let me go with him (selfish adults wanting romantic breaks!), I became determined to visit the Caribbean myself and discover slices of paradise like Banana Beach Honduras.

After my fourth or fifth trip to the type of beautiful resorts my father always visited I realized that they really weren't for me. Who doesn't love the pure white sand of Palm Beach in Aruba or the gentle party atmosphere of Luquillo Beach in Puerto Rico? But I wanted something more.

For me visiting the Caribbean should be like visiting a little slice of paradise. The overcrowded and overbuilt aspects of the Gold Coast in Barbados, or the spring break atmosphere in Seven Mile Beach, Jamaica just do not cut it for me. Paradise should be paradise. So for the past few years I have been searching out undiscovered spots in the Caribbean for my vacations.

I found another amazing spot this year... Banana Beach Honduras. About 30 minutes away from the sleepy coastal town of Trujillo in the north part of the country, near to the better known Bay Islands of Roatan and Utilla. Nestled in the middle of Trujillo Bay, Banana Beach is just what I want from a Caribbean spot... small, secluded and with an emphasis on uniqueness. Rather than a hotel, or some other type of complex, the owners opted for three two bed-room cabanas.

The cabanas have been put together with a real eye for detail. The kitchen and bathroom are modern, but the rooms benefit from Colonial furniture and bamboo features. One of their best features are the gazebos which are covered to allow you to sit in the evening with a drink, without worrying about the bugs (a tiresome reality for all Caribbean vacations!). But for me the most important feature of any Caribbean resort is the beach and Banana Beach in Honduras definitely lives up to its reputation.

The Beach front stretches out for miles in either direction. More development is on its way to the Trujillo area, but at present the coast line is pretty undisturbed. If you want a relaxing beach walk, Santa Fe, a vibrant Garifuna town, is not too far away. The water is crystal clear, the resort beach is clean and well looked after. The main bar is close by so you can have agua de coco (coconut water) to your heart's content! The beach has just the right combination of interesting visitors and locals - neither of which are trying to sell you souvenirs every minute!

So, if you are looking for a little slice of undeveloped Caribbean paradise I recommend Banana Beach Honduras. Trujillo is developing along the same lines as Roatan and Utilla were a few years back, so I would suggest that you visit before the crowds set in!

Christopher Columbus discovered Trujillo a few hundred years ago, I would encourage you to re-discover it before everyone else does!

MUNNAR: Munnar is located in the Idduki district. It is the most famous city to experience the pristine grace of Backwaters of Kerala. Munnar is a major tourist destination. This city is major center of tea, coffee and rubber plantations. It is also a popular destination for adventure sports.
